Crumpet Cottage is filled with the sights and smells of chocolate – sticky fingerprints around the kitchen and a nearly empty pack of Rennie. We have completely embraced National Chocolate Week 2011 (there was not much persuading needed).

Searching for something not too sweet, with a dense hit of cacao, I opted to attempt this flourless chocolate cake recipe from Annie Bell’s Gorgeous Cakes book.

Green & Blacks Chocolate

It turned out pretty well! Although poor Mr C had to be enlisted to hand whisk the meringue as my weedy arms were not up to the challenge. Crumpet Cottage is definitely lacking in electronic baking equipment, unfortunately a Kitchen Aid Mixer is also the price of one months rent, so we may be waiting a little longer.

Tip: To transport your cakes to meet family and friends, turn your tin upside-down, it’s much easier to cut. But, don’t forget it is meant to be the wrong way up, a few coffee cakes have lost their icing because I completely forgot!
